Hi! My name is Joan Hawkins and I’m very happy to have you visit my BLOG! This is my 32nd year with the Decatur Independent School District. I currently teach 5th and 6th grade math and am having the best time with all this new technology!

I have been happily married to my husband Sid for 44 years. Being married to me, he has also been in education for 31 years and has always been supportive in all that I have done. I have 3 wonderful children (Allen, Andy and Amy), 3 great children-in-laws(Debra, Tessa, and Steve) and 8 fantastic grandchildren (Brandon, Autumn, Ryan, Tanner, Taylor, Andrew, Samantha, and Joey)!

I started my college education in DECATUR, at Decatur Baptist College. I continued in Denton at Texas Woman’s University where I received my Bachelor’s in Education and also my Master’s. I have always taught at Decatur Intermediate School and during my 31 years, I have taught approximately 2250 students.

There have been many changes in my years at Decatur and I have always felt that I have become a better teacher because of the leadership that we have and the improvements that we make every year at DISD.

My goal (as in every year) is to leave the school for the summer knowing I have made a difference in someone’s life and to always improve myself for the next school year.
